Online applications and nominations for Master Builders’ Building Excellence Awards are now open. Members can prepare and upload their submittals for all three of our major awards programs—the Regional Building Awards, the Excellence in Construction Awards and the Excellence in Housing Awards.

The system moved online last year to make it easier and less cumbersome for members to prepare and submit their projects for review.

The system offers a number of helpful features:

• Easy, fast registration, reducing the time it takes to enter
• An “auto save” feature that works as you go, allowing members to make changes or update their submissions right up until deadline
• Intuitive entry process
• Entry management
• Easy entry into multiple categories
• Easy tracking of key dates

As always, there are numerous benefits to entering the awards programs, including:

• Gaining a competitive edge
• Valuable self-promotion
• Recognition not just within our industry, but among the general public as well
• Benchmarking – see how you compare to your competitors
• Motivation and reward for hardworking employees

A number of our members have shared their thoughts on entering the awards including builders Drew Larkin and Craig Drought of Larkin and Drought Homes.

“Winning the awards is the best advertising that you can do because you’re recognised and you’ve put yourself out there to be scrutinised by a professional,” Drew Larkin said.

“We haven’t won everything that we’ve put in but we’ve always got good feedback, even on the ones we haven’t won and then been able to improve and better ourselves.”

Even without winning an award, our members reap the benefits of sharing their work, as Peter Stepic, of Elite Homes, can attest.

Stepic and his business partner, Emilio Rossi, first entered the Building Excellence Awards in 2011, the year they launched their business. It scored them an immediate win for a renovation, and they’ve maintained their momentum ever since. More submitted projects earned them nominations in 2012 and 2013.

In 2014, a chance referral came about through one of Stepic’s hired apprentices, leading to a renovation for a heritage-listed Port Melbourne home. In October 2015, that home earned Stepic and Rossi a Master Builders Association of Victoria award for Best Renovation/Addition from $300 thousand to $500 thousand. They then went on to win the parallel category at the national level.

“There’s no doubt about it,” Stepic says of his involvement with the awards. “We’ve picked up more clients.”
