Maben Group Pty Ltd has been named Master Builders Victoria Commercial Master Builder of the Year for its stunning upgrade to the Highpoint shopping centre in Maribyrnong.

Last night (Thursday) at Crown Melbourne, Master Builders Victoria (MBV) CEO Rebecca Casson congratulated Maben Group Pty Ltd and other major award winners at a gala awards ceremony.

“Once again, our Excellence in Construction Awards were brimming with outstanding work that improves the lives of Victorians throughout our great state,” she said.

“The commercial projects showcased in this year’s awards were very impressive.

“MBV congratulates all those winners and nominees, together with all our wonderful members, who kept our industry COVIDSafe and open in 2021 and further enhanced the reputation of what a Master Builder is capable of creating.”

Ms Casson said the Highpoint shopping centre project involved the upgrade of more than 10,000sqm of public shopping malls over levels two and three.

“More impressive is work took place within the confines of a busy day to day shopping centre,” she said.

The judges were especially impressed by the elaborate floor finishes which consisted of a mix of bluestone and granite tiling incorporating a feature granite wave and decorative 'possum tail swirl'.

Other quality finishes included a feature timber-look ceiling which included recessed inserts of plasterboard and perforated timber panels to achieve the look of a 'honeycomb', plus decorative cork wallpaper to feature curved bulkheads with stainless steel ribbed Rimex.

Meanwhile, the Regional Builder of the Year – Commercial was awarded to Rendine Constructions Pty Ltd for its work on the Marcus Oldham College Learning Centre in Waurn Ponds.

Ms Casson said Marcus Oldham College had built an enviable reputation for preparing business leaders who pursued successful careers in agriculture, agribusiness, and equine management - demanding a high-class construction and professional execution across both construction and project management.

“The new building’s complex design focused on internal and external architectural details,” she said.

“This can be seen in the use of external materials integrated indoors and the use of conventional products in unique ways such as the pressed metal ceiling used on intricate angles instead of flat.

“The attention to detail was further demonstrated by the sheer number of hours spent designing the structural steel shop drawings with a total of over 3000 hours dedicated to the intricate and innovative design.”

The Young Builder of the Year – Commercial award went to Conal Magee, from 2Construct Pty Ltd.

Conal has obtained a Diploma of Building from RMIT and a Bachelor of Applied Science in Construction Management from RMIT.

He currently holds a VBA Commercial Builders License Limited for Low Rise buildings.

Conal is currently studying for a Master of Business Administration and started his career as a contract administrator/project manager with Ireland Brown Pty Ltd.

In 2013 he started working for 2Construct Pty Ltd as a contract administrator and has since been promoted to project manager.

He has worked on projects valued up to $11m, including Tarneit Senior College, Edithvale Life Saving Club, CRC Caroline Springs New Performing Arts Centre, Sandringham Golf Links Redevelopment, and TLC Homestead Estate Wallington.

“Conal is a very well accomplished, composed, polite, well-spoken and confident professional builder,” Ms Casson said.

“He prides himself in achieving extremely high-quality standards through benchmarking and prototyping and therefore guaranteeing client satisfaction whilst delivering projects under tight financial and time constraints.  We congratulate him on this fantastic achievement”.
