An elegant country homestead using traditional building materials and the final stage of Castlemaine Secondary College's redevelopment received top honours at the 2022 North West Master Builders Victoria Regional Building Awards.

Dettmann Homes was named North West Residential Regional Builder of the Year for a highly detailed traditional farmhouse in Central Victoria.

Meanwhile, Fairbrother was named North West Commercial Regional Builder of the Year for the final stage of the Castlemaine Secondary College redevelopment.

Master Builders Victoria (MBV) Acting CEO Tristan Moseley congratulated both Dettmann Homes and Fairbrother on their success.

Mr Moseley said the farmhouse project in Langley near Kyneton allowed Dettmann Homes's carpentry and handcrafting skills to shine.

The owners' background in the United Kingdom referenced English farmhouses and country aesthetics incorporated into the 'Australian farmhouse' style.

"This country homestead was visioned as an elegant, timeless country abode to complement the established buildings and gardens," Mr Moseley said.

"The level of detail throughout this home is grand.

"The windows and doors alone are stunning in their detail.

"The same skill was applied to the linings of the extensive verandas; all finished using precise mouldings, strappings and mitring."

Ms Moseley said the home was designed in traditional styling, and the final L-shaped farmhouse allowed for easy access and panoramic views of the gardens.

"This beautiful home is wrapped in graceful verandas which were elevated above the existing ground to form a 'skirt' of recycled brickwork and travertine paving," he said.

"The deep verandas, featuring curved concrete columns, were planned as a cool and shaded area to sit during warm summers and to form protection in the winter months."

The winning home utilised traditional building materials, including painted weatherboards, handcrafted timber windows and doors, and articulated panelling, mouldings, and trims. The interiors welcome colour, rich patterns, and aged materials.

"As a result, this home carries an elegant character that will stand the test of time," Mr Moseley said.

Dettmann Homes will compete in the Victorian Excellence in Housing Awards on October 14 at The Palladium at Crown in Melbourne.

Completed over three stages, the final piece in the redevelopment of Castlemaine Secondary College saw a new administration building, artisan's precinct, and extension to the performance zone.

Mr Moseley said winning builder Fairbrother carried out extensive external landscaping as part of the build, including access stairs, ramps and terraces to help students navigate the sloped terrain.

"Pre-planning and seamless execution of works saw the redevelopment of the college's busy administration area," he said.

"Upgrading essential services while providing the school with ongoing facilities and connections was the benchmark for this redevelopment.

"The construction area comprised the inner working areas of the school, and great care was taken to ensure existing services and programs were unimpeded by daily construction activities.

"With carefully orchestrated handovers between stages and managers, the buildings were completed with great skill and on time."

Fairbrother will compete in the Victorian Excellence in Construction Awards on August 12 at The Palladium at Crown.
