Official results out today show that the volume of civil/engineering construction work in Victoria dropped 4.5 per cent during the March 2021 quarter.

Master Builders Victoria Executive Director Growth and Relationships Melissa Greenall said activity also remains a little underwhelming by historic standards, with the volume of work in Victoria down 13.9 per cent compared with the first quarter of last year – the biggest drop in the country.

“Of the civil/engineering construction work done in Victoria during the March 2021 quarter, almost one-half (48.1 per cent) was carried out for the public sector,” Ms Greenall said.

“Perhaps surprisingly, the value of civil/engineering work done for the public sector in Victoria dropped by 10 per cent compared with the first quarter of 2020.”

Work done for the private sector increased by 3 per cent against the same period last year, Ms Greenall added.

“In terms of the outstanding pipeline of civil and engineering construction projects, the value of work still to be completed was estimated at $14.1 billion as at 31 March 2021,” she said.

“This was 22.1 per cent down on a year earlier – a statistic that suggests the forward pipeline of work is shrinking fast.”
