As the 2021 Australian Open reaches its climax, Melbourne’s famed Melbourne Park precinct has received another accolade – the builder of its latest refurbishment, Lendlease, has been named Master Builders Victoria’s Commercial Builder of the Year for the project.

Lendlease completed stage 2 of the Rod Laver Arena development in 2020, and it was adjudged the premier building project in the category. The project included a new patron entry, reorientation of the arena entry, enlarging artist dressing rooms, introducing a large-scale restaurant experience and roof-top bar and, converting the arena from full seating to concert mode in four hours with the introduction of 1200 retractable seats.

In other awards announced today in Master Builders Victoria’s 2020 Building Excellence Awards, residential builder Cam Henderson of CJ Henderson Builders accepted the award for Master Builder of the Year in the Housing sector. Their major renovation of a property in Jan Juc earned their award, the judges commenting on its seamless mix of the old and new.

The future of the industry was also honoured, with Blackburn North’s Michael Domajnko of Milara Building and Development winning the 2020 Master Builders Victoria Residential Young Master Builder of the Year. Michael started working for his father as a carpenter in 2006, eventually taking over the business in 2017.  His work includes high end residential homes and many residential multi-unit and mixed-use apartment complexes.

While in the commercial section, 2020 Master Builders Victoria Young Builder of the Year was awarded to Charlie Chisholm of Kane Construction. Charlie has worked on projects valued up to $60 million including Sunshine Hospital Acute Services Building, St John of God Geelong Hospital Redevelopment, and the Deakin University Waurn Ponds IISRI Project Stages 1 &2.

Master Builders CEO Rebecca Casson congratulated all winners:

“The quality of work submitted to our judges in 2020 is a credit to our industry, showcasing the skill and craft of our Master Builders in the face of the challenges of 2020.

“Congratulations to Lendlease and CJ Henderson Builders for their well-deserved wins. The quality of the residential projects seen on the Surf Coast from Cam and his team are a great showcase for what can be achieved in housing today.

“The work of Lendlease on the Rod Laver project is one that will be enjoyed by many us as we go to see concerts or sporting events in the future, but will also shine a light on the excellence of Victorian builders to the world.

“As winners of the two major individual awards, Michael Domajnko and Charlie Chisholm have shown that the future of our industry is in good hands with their work in 2020 and were deserved winners of the Young Master Builder of the Year awards for each awards program.”

In usual circumstances the winners would be announced at a gala dinner, but instead the major awards were announced on a live YouTube television production stream today. Prior to that, a number of category awards have been announced on social media over the past month.
