MBV says ‘Devil is in the detail’ of new Victorian building legislation

Master Builders Victoria says the Victorian Government’s announced new building legislation could have a dramatic impact on the industry.

Today Premier Jacinta Allan announced her government would be introducing the Building Legislation Amendment (Buyer Protections) Bill 2025 and ‘kicking off consultation on more proposed reforms to protect consumers’.

In acknowledging the new legislation, MBV CEO Michaela Lihou said her organisation had yet to see the full details of how the new laws would be determined and enforced.

“Again, as always, I stress that Master Builders Victoria understands and supports the objective of consumer protection,” she said.

“But we also believe in a system that treats honest builders with respect, and protects their rights to run their businesses appropriately, under the eye of a fair and just industry watchdog.”

Ms Lihou said she was concerned about some initial aspects of the proposed Bill which had been highlighted.

“We need more information, because as always ‘the Devil is in the detail’ and neither builders nor consumers can afford to have rushed legislation delivering bad outcomes.”
