Help Shape the Future Workforce for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC)

BuildSkills Australia is about to kick off a new project on skill and workforce needs for Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and we’re keen to invite industry stakeholders involved in this field to take part. This may include modular builds, off-site construction, container & 3D printed homes, drones, prefabricated components and similar innovations.

While technical and commercial aspects of MMC have been explored, a critical gap remains in understanding the workforce transformation needed to support its broader adoption. To address this BuildSkills Australia is leading a comprehensive study into the workforce, skills and training implications of adopting MMC.

The study will provide actionable insights to inform workforce strategies, better align vocational training systems with industry needs and identify career pathways.  Delivery is in three phases over 12-18 months and will start shortly:

  • Phase 1 – Benchmarking MMC adoption and training in Australia and internationally
  • Phase 2 – Workforce impacts and skills requirements
  • Phase 3 – VET sector readiness

We are now seeking expressions of interest to participate, which may involve:

  • Completing a short pre-survey to gather general company information;
  • Taking part in a semi-structured interview to share perspectives on skills needs, labour market shifts and workforce challenges;
  • Hosting site or factory observations to align findings with real-world practices.

We aim to include a diverse range of perspectives, involving manufacturers, developers, builders, suppliers, traditional contractors and industry association experts.

You are warmly invited to register your interest in being consulted. Involvement is flexible – you may nominate to participate in one or more of the activities listed above.

If you may be interested, please contact Ingrid Mountford, State Manager Industry Engagement VIC/TAS at in*****@bu*********.au, indicating your preferred level of engagement and contact details for the most appropriate person in your organisation.

Thank you for considering this opportunity to help shape the future workforce of Australia’s construction industry.
