Event Description
Join our industry led solutions workshop and guest presenters as we explore the solutions to building better energy efficient homes more productively.
The construction industry is often challenged by changing regulations that increase the difficulty of construction and require change. This results in a focus on the barriers to change. In our training sessions the barriers to change identified are often solved by other people in the room.
In the spirit of this we plan to gather together designers and builders in the same room to explore barriers and develop solutions. A series of short presentations by industry thought leaders, will be followed by the opportunity to come together in small groups to explore the barriers to energy efficient homes and improved productivity.
Themes to be explored
• Is building 7 Star really that hard?
• How do you control those extra costs?
• What role do designers play?
• What role do builders play?
• What have you found to be difficult or expensive to do?
• What do you worry about?
• What do you want to find out more about?
• What tips and tricks can you offer as solutions?

Philip has been the Sustainable Building Advisor at Master Builders Victoria for the past 20 years and has worked on building and construction related projects and research for the last 24 years.
Phil’s extensive experience in education and training has informed the development of nationally recognised sustainable construction training programs and the national roll out of the accredited Master Builder Green Living program.
He has provided advice on energy efficiency, sustainability solutions and onsite environmental management on projects ranging from large infrastructure developments to small residential building companies.
Phil has presented at forums and conferences both nationally and internationally on sustainability, modular construction, and emerging industry trends.
Allan started his apprenticeship in Ballarat as a carpenter/joiner in 1980 and started his own business, Hocking Homes in 1990. He built his first energy efficient home in 1992 (well it was more energy efficient than the standard build at the time).
He was determined that focusing on energy efficient buildings was essential at that time, as his clients reported that the house was the most comfortable, they had ever experienced. Despite achieving progressive improvements, he observed that the standards and methodologies used had certain limitations and shortcomings.
At a Green Living conference held by the Master Builders Association of Victoria, he heard a speaker talking about Passivhaus. Because of his previous experience he instantly understood the importance of the Passivhaus process and why it was so much better than the standards he had been following. He completed the Passivhaus Tradesperson course in 2015, as well as obtaining the equipment, and training, to do Blower Door Testing.
