About the winning project

Howqua Track was designed by Ross McKinnon at McKinnon Designs to create a modern sustainable home with rustic elements to sit in the landscape in the high country of Victoria. The three-gabled pavilion house is powered off-grid, and building materials were sustainably sourced through re-purposing wharf timbers and wharf skins for external cladding and recycled red bricks in the central wing, kitchen and butler’s pantry and as a feature behind the iron fireplace. The lining of the living, dining, kitchen and bedroom ceilings used locally sourced solid blackbutt adding to the rustic feel of Howqua. The installation of the many double-glazed doors and windows allowed uninterrupted views to the foothills of the Alpine country, with Mt Timbertop and Mt Buller in the foreground.
