Master Builder of the Year

Grocon Pty Ltd
Project: AAMI - Melbourne Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne
Architects: Cox Architects and Planners

Website: http://www.grocon.com.au

This magnificent venue is Melbourne’s first purpose-build sunken bowl rectangular pitch stadium with over 30,000 seats that provide spectators with unobstructed views due to the absence of pillars and support structures. Over 75 individual subcontractors were engaged on the venue which has a world class “new generation” playing surface of interwoven fibre and real grass, training facilities, lap pools, corporate suites, a 1000 capacity dining room and much more. The design process and construction methodology required for this complex and intricate structure caused great difficulty for construction which was ultimately overcome by Grocon’s clever approach to presented problems.

Special Categories

Health & Safety

Walton Construction Pty Ltd
Project: Saint Mary of the Cross Mausoleum, Melbourne General Cemetery, Carlton
Architect: Harmer Architecture Pty Ltd

Website: http://www.waltonconstruction.com.au

Safety was incorporated into the design of the above and below ground mausoleum and associated carpark for the Melbourne General Cemetery. Site constraints included heritage trees, a memorial garden and existing graves with buried remains. The construction approach prioritised safety to avoid problems associated with the restricted access and coordination. To best cope with working 8.5 meters below ground, an innovative top down construction method was adapted to avoid the risks of standard build methods. All trades were able to operate from within the confines of the basement structure to minimise risks.

An intricate array of pixilated shade panels minimises thermal loads and sunlight glare from outside this remarkable building.
