Master Builder of the Year

Winner - Hansen Yuncken Pty Ltd
Project: Wangaratta Performing Arts Centre, Wangaratta

The development of this Performing Arts Centre in Wangaratta provides a facility to meet the various requirements of the wider community in conjunction with performing arts and entertainment needs. Functional areas include a visually dynamic entrance and foyer and administration offices, ticketing and reception. There is also a café and theatre bar for 40-60 people. The theatre and backstage facilities include dressing rooms and accessible showers. The flat floor function facility provides for 572 seated theatre style and 300 seated for dining and dance floor configuration.






Regional Builder of the Year

Project: Dalkeith Community Building, Traralgon

This Community Centre is a two storey building constructed on a concrete slab with a combination of steel and timber framing. The internal walls are clad  with plasterboard and timber veneer and the floor finishes include vinyl, carpet, tiles and exposed aggregate concrete. Externally the huge building is clad with face brickwork, fibre cement sheeting and corrugated iron. The attractive landscaping has been completed with timber fencing, glass pool fencing and exposed aggregate concrete to complete an appropriate overall finish to this impressive facility.




Excellence in Shop & Office Fitout

Project: EPA Accommodation Project, Carlton

The most notable features of this project are by far its internal finishes. A wide range of striking but environmentally sensitive surfaces cover all areas of the tenancy. Reclaimed stringy bark timber defines kitchen areas lined with a mix of both dark and light veneer panelling. Each of the four floors are flooded with natural light from externally glazed walls and an internal atrium feature. Joinery items have been incorporated to provide both function and feature throughout the workplace. The greatest challenge was meeting the environmental standards necessary for achieving the 6-star Green Star rating.




Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings Under $5M


Winner - Kubic Pty Ltd
Project: SC Land Offices, South Yarra

The heritage façade of this building was retained and carefully repaired while the internal structure was demolished and totally reconstructed. An extensive use of joinery and stone was used in the new interior. Individually selected slabs of stone on the reception floor continue up and over the counter with great effect. Cupboard doors along the first floor western wall have been finished in oak that was “book matched” create the impression of continuous repetitive grain pattern. Floor to ceiling mosaic tiles and marble were used in the bathrooms and an extensive use of skylights provide an abundance of light.

The development of this 530 seat Performing Arts Centre provides a facility to meet the needs of the residents of the rural city of Wangaratta. The new facility consists of slabs on ground, pre-cast black and white concrete panels, structural steel, brick work, stainless steel ‘Spandex’ linings, glass, timber decking, and a range of other architectural finishes.The external finishes reflect a strong design comprising sharpness of joints, reveals/corners, finishes with external plywood soffit linings and compressed sheet linings to exterior walls.

Project: Ivanhoe Girls Grammar School, Ivanhoe

This new five storey educational project provides an impressive, unique and modern facility for all staff and students. Due to the unique shape of the building, natural ground contours, town planning requirements and the client’s requirement for large open spaces, the structure of the building features a combination of above ground structure and a two storey basement retention system, including reinforced bored piers, precast concrete panels, insitu concrete structure, post tensioned slabs and structural steel. As diverse as the structure, the facade displays quality of workmanship and fulfills the client’s desired aesthetic appearance.





Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings $15M - $20M


Winner - Watpac Construction (Vic) Pty Ltd
Project: Victorian College of the Arts Secondary School, Southbank

This school project has provided a state of the art two storey high school, specialising in dance and music, designed to accommodate approximately 450 students and staff. One of the key construction issues for this project involved access to and around the site which was limited to one side only, making the coordination of structural works a major issue. Additionally, due to the acoustic requirements of the project it proved extremely difficult to ensure that the acoustic integrity of the designated areas was maintained throughout the construction period.

Special Commendation - St Hilliers Pty Ltd
Project: Crown, Melbourne

Part of the Crown complex, the West End refurbishment was intended to create a casual restaurant with a seating area providing an escapist retreat. The new architecture is contemporary, warm with an innovative design style and extensive use of exposed curved timber beams. The requirement to match an existing aluminum cladding to the facade profile which was no longer in production, called for specialist manufacture. Glass and precast concrete was also used to match the existing cladding to the building.

Winner - Abigroup Contractors
Project: Camberwell Civic Precinct Renewal – Stage 1, Camberwell

Stage one of this project involved the redevelopment of a number of historically significant buildings by sympathetically combining new and existing structures. The structural design is especially captivating with a number of open voids created between the old and new buildings to allow natural light streaming in from above to accentuate the heritage features.  An innovative first floor mezzanine provides a linkway, giving unprecedented integration
between the heritage wings to the east and west of the site. The combination of the existing heritage facade and modern architecture has revitalised the image of this historic building.




Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings $30M - $80M

Project: Icehouse – National Ice Sports Centre, Docklands

This Sports Centre project was awarded under a Design Construct contract. The building accommodates two Olympic sized ice rinks, office accommodation, various rooms, 1000 seat auditorium, recreational and sports facilities. The building features a steel framed construction design, constructed as two halves with movement in each ice rink acting independently to each other. An innovative feature involves the rink pads made up of two concrete slabs, the lower slab as the ‘Warm Slab’ and the upper slab as the “Cold Slab.” There is a slip layer and insulation between the warm and cold slabs.





Excellence in Construction of Commercial Buildings Over $80M


Winner - Probuild
Project: Chadstone Shopping Centre, Stage 33, Chadstone

The Stage 33 project is the largest single stage of work ever undertaken at Chadstone. Construction planning was critical to the success of the project, which included the demolition of the only remaining single level retail mall, and completing two levels of retail tenancies throughout the centre whilst the remainder of the tenancies continued to trade. The new mall features a 300 metre long dramatic curved roof of high performance solar glass allowing natural light to flood the interior spaces, with voids carrying the light to the lower level.

Winner - Hooker Cockram Projects Ltd
Project: CSR Gyprocket

Hooker Cockram embarked on a two year design and construct contract as part of CSR’s larger upgrade of their plasterboard manufacturing facility at their existing plant. Scope of works include five separable portions that were progressively constructed whilst maintaining full CSR operations. Significant conveyor systems from the Yarraville 5 wharf were constructed by Hooker Cockram, allowing gypsum laden ships to automatically unload their cargo and transport it directly to the purpose built Gypsum storage shed. Quality of work outside this very small fitout was to an exceptional standard throughout the entire 50,000m2 facility and CSR are extremely satisfied with the finished product.

Project: Springvale Road Separation Project, Nunawading

The Springvale Road Rail Separation Project was an Alliance contract with two Government and three public partners. It was managed collaboratively with staff from all the Alliance partners working full time in various roles. The project has already achieved improved road and rail safety, reduced traffic congestion, better transport facilities for bus and train commuters and safer conditions for pedestrians crossing Springvale Road. The new Nunawading station and pedestrian underpass feels open and spacious with light streaming in through glass panels and its bubble roof canopy, which is made from the same materials as the aqua cube used in the Beijing Olympics.




Excellence in Health & Safety


Winner - Bovis Lend Lease Pty Ltd
Project: The New Royal Children’s Hospital (RCH), Parkville

Bovis Lend Lease were responsible for the design and construction of the new children’s hospital. The site management team identified project specific hazards including site logistics and traffic management, front entry elevated transfer structure and facade/atrium maintenance and cleaning. A Scaffold Fall Protection Screen (SFPS) was developed, with the objective to allow  scaffolders the ability within a work procedure to erect, modify and dismantle from behind hand rails on a full deck, thus eliminating the risks of falling from the scaffolds.




Best Sustainable Energy Project


Winner - Grocon Pty Ltd
Project: Media House, Docklands

Grocon in conjunction with Sustainability Victoria developed a waste management and minimisation plan for Media House. The target was set that 80% of waste by weight would be re-used or recycled and diverted from landfill. The management process included the development and implementation of innovative practices to eliminate or minimise waste, promotion of the use of recycled, recyclable and restored material and safe disposal of unavoidable waste. This coupled with a 60,000 L tank to capture stormwater runoff for reuse on site, innovative construction practices to build over railway lines, a redesign of the platform over the rail that led to reduced materials use and embodied energy and a commitment to sub-contractor education to ensure that they also lifted their practices makes this a winning entry.

Winner - Byrne Construction Systems Pty Ltd
Project: North Melbourne Football & Community Centre, North Melbourne

The scope of works undertaken involved the supply and laying of all brickwork elements on the facade of this club project. The desired look was achieved by using recycled bricks allowing for successful blending in with the original retained bricks. Many of the construction procedures involved reviving old techniques such as soldier coursing, buttresses and vertically stepping, which provided an opportunity for the young team to put their skills into practice.
